Daimyo

During the long Tokugawa Shogunate (1616 - 1867), Japan was divided into fiefs which were presided over by feudal lords known as daimyo (dime-yo)- which literally translated means, "great name". The daimyo were divided into two groups based on their relationship with Iwyasu Tokugawa, the founder of Japan's last great feudal house. In the first group were those who had been allied with Ieyasu before the battle of Sekigahara in 1603. The second group was made up of those who had opposed him or were neutral.

There were also three ranks of daimyo, depending on the revenues of their fiefs and whether or not they owned a castle. The three classes were kokushu (koe-ku-shu) - provincial lords whose fiefs produced at least 300,000 koku (koku = 4.96 bushels) of rice, joshu (joe-shu) or castle-owning lords whose annual income was 100,000 to 300,000 koku of rice, and ryoshu (rio-shu), or lords without castles, with incomes from 10,000 to 100,000 koku of rice.

The Tokugawa Shogunate gave the daimyo 13 articles of law called Buke-Shohatto to follow. These articles controlled such matters as castle repairs, road repairs, and marriage. The first two articles ordered the samurai to devote themselves to literature and arms and to refrain from debauchery. Articles 3-5 covered how the daimyo were to govern their fiefs. Articles 6-8 prohibited conspiracies or other activities by the daimyo against the shogunate. Articles 9-11 prescribed the clothing that each class was to wear, the vehicles that each could use, and the manners appropriate to each class. The last two articles, 12-13, called for the samurai to live in a frugal manner and for the daimyo to promote reatiners on the basis of merit.

Thus the daimyo were responsible to the Tokugawa Shogunate for upholding the policies of the central government and were restricted in matters having to do with the security of the shogunate. The daimyo were privileged to exercise absolute power in most areas within their domains - particularly the lives and fortunes of their subjects - but they were controlled in all areas of national interest by the laws of the shogun and could be removed by the shogunate government.

Tomoe Gozen - Woman Warrior

Tomoe Gozen
Woman warrior

Tomoe Gozen provides one of the few examples of a true woman warrior in early to early modern Japanese history. While countless other women were at times forced to take up arms (in defense of their castle, for example), Tomoe seems to have been a consumate warrior. She was married to Kiso (Minamoto) Yoshinaka (though the Heike Monogatari describes her as a female attendant), who rose against the Taira and in 1184 took Kyoto after winning the Battle of Kurikawa. With the Taira forced into the Western Provinces, Yoshinaka began insinuating that it was he should carry the mantle of leadership of the Minamoto - a suggestion that prompted an attack by Minamoto Yoritomo. Yoshinaka - and Tomoe - faced the Yoritomo's warriors at Awazu, a desperate fight in which Tomoe took a least one head.
The Heike Monogatari says this of Tomoe…

"…Tomoe was especially beautiful, with white skin, long hair, and charming features. She was also a remarkably strong archer, and as a swordswoman she was a warrior worth a thousand, ready to confront a demon or a god, mounted or on foot. She handled unbroken horses with superb skill; she rode unscathed down perilous descents. Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a might bow; and she preformed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors."
(Tale of the Heike, McCullough, pg. 291)

The HM goes on to say that Tomoe was one of the last five of the Kiso standing at the tail end of the Battle of Awazu, and that Yoshinaka, knowing that death was near, urged her to flee. Though reluctant, she rushed a Minamoto warrior named Onda no Hachiro Moroshige, cut his head off, and then fled for the eastern provinces.
Some have written that Tomoe in fact died in battle with her husband, while others assert that she survived and became a nun.

Seppuku

The act of slitting one's own belly is such an unbelievable way in which to commit suicide that it is possibly the most famous element of the samurai mythos. Known in the West as hara-kiri (in fact a 'vulgar' expression probably never commonly used by the samurai themselves), the origin of disembowlment as suicide is impossible to pinpoint but the first notable acts were provided by Minamoto Tametomo and Minamoto Yorimasa in the latter part of the 12th Century. The original motivations for this method of death may well have been purely practical. Miura Yoshinobu's example aside, cutting off one's own head is a bit difficult, and as the spirit was felt to reside in the stomach, slitting the belly open was felt to be the most straightforward (if not quickest) way to die. Over the centuries, the philosophy behind seppuku was refined. One samurai wrote many centuries after the deaths of Minamoto Tametomo and Yorimasa that the spirit of a man was like that of an apple's core, unseen and locked within the skin.

The apple certainly exists, but to the core [soul] this existence as yet seems inadequate; if words cannot endorse it, then the only way to endorse it is with the eyes. Indeed, for the core the only sure mode of existence is to exist and to see at the same time. There is only one method of solving this contradiction. It is for a knife to be plunged deep into the apple so that it is split open and the core is exposed to the light-to the same light, that is, as the surface skin. Yet then the existence of the cut apple falls into fragments; the core of the apple sacrifices existence for the sake of seeing.21

The above was clearly an esoteric point of view. Others have written that the act of belly slitting required an exceptional bravery, and over the years it became a 'privilege' reserved for the samurai. Commoners might hang or drown themselves, whilst samurai women might slit their own throats; only samurai could commit Seppuku. To be simply executed was a mark of particular shame, and generally reserved for notorious traitors.

By the Edo Period, the act of seppuku had become a fully developed ritual with Shinto undertones.
First, tatami edged with white would be set out, upon which a large white cushion was placed. Witnesses would arrange themselves discreetly to one side, depending on how important the coming suicide was considered.
The samurai, often garbed in a white kimono, would kneel on the pillow in formal style on his heels, hopefully in a composed manner. Just over a meter behind and to the left of the samurai knelt his kaishakunin, or 'second'. The second was often a close friend of the deceased, although his duty was not a popular one. His job was to prevent the samurai committing suicide from experiencing undo suffering by cutting the doomed man's head off once he had slit his belly. Botching this duty could be a shameful disgrace, and a steady hand was required.
In front of the samurai lay a knife on a lacquered tray. When he felt ready, the samurai would loosen the folds of his kimono and expose his belly. He would then lift the knife with one hand and unsheathe it with the other, setting the sheathe to one side. When he had prepared himself, he would drive the knife into the left side of the stomach, then draw it across to the right. The blade would then be turned in the wound and brought upward. Many samurai did not have to endure this last, unbelievable agony, as the second would lop their heads off at the first sign of pain. The cut carried out to its finish was known as the jumonji, or 'crosswise cut', and to perform it in its entirety was considered a particularly impressive seppuku.
Needless to say, one's frame of mind was of particular importance when approaching this act. The Hagakure and other Edo works relate stories of samurai losing their composure just prior to committing suicide, and in some cases having to be forcibly decapitated. Samurai were, after all, only human, and perhaps only through a lifetime of preparation could seppuku be faced with the prerequisite coolness.
Why would a samurai be expected or decide to slit open his own belly? The reasons are many, and much is made of them elsewhere. We'll content ourselves here with the briefest of lists of those reasons not involving a direct punishment…

Junshi: this act of suicide involved following one's lord in death. Not entirely uncommon in the days of open samurai warfare, junshi was banned in the Edo Period as wasteful. The last famous example was that of the General Nogi Maresue in 1912 following the death of the Emperor Meiji.

Kanshi: Suicide through remonstration. Not common, this involved killing one's self to make a point to a lord when all other forms of persuasion had failed. Perhaps the best known example of this is provided by Hirate Nakatsukasa Kiyohide (1493-1553), who commited suicide to make a youthful and irreverant Oda Nobunaga change his ways.

Sokotsu-shi: Here, a samurai would kill himself as a way of making amends for some transgression. This is possibly the best-known reason for seppuku, and has perhaps been popularized far out of proportion to its frequency. One well-known instance involves the Takeda general Yamamoto Kansuke Haruyuki (1501-1561), who flung himself into the enemy after his plans had put his lord in grave danger. Badly wounded, he withdrew from the fray and commited suicide.

Finally, it should be remembered that as ever-present as death may have been to many samurai (of Oda Nobuhide's many sons, for example, eight died untimely deaths-including the famous Nobunaga) most died the old-fashioned way: of old age. There are numerous examples of famous long-lived samurai, including Môri Motonari (74), Môri Terumoto (72), Nabeshima Naoshige (82), Ryûzôji Iekane (92), Sanada Nobuyuki (92), Shimazu Yoshihiro (84), and Ukita Hideie (90).

The noted swordsman Tsukahara Bokuden probably best summed up the philosophy of death as it related to the samurai with the words...

For the samurai to learn
There's only one thing,
One last thing -
To face death unflinchingly.22

Coke Cola bisa buat ngebersiin karatan??? WEW!!!!

WEW that's something new!!!

Emang sih toko famili gw rame sih, apalagi pasca Tsunami di Aceh, kan banyak tuh organisasi kemanusiaan yg mau ngebantu kita ngebangun lagi kota Aceh.

Gw sendiri juga takut sih pas gw liat beneran bisa, dan si Ce Bule itu bertanya apa gw sering minum Coke Cola??? Gw jawab kaga, soal na gw dulu gw pernah hampir masuk RS gara2 minum kebanyakan soft drink, alhasil usus gw berlobang, DIKIT!!!! Nah itu sendiri juga bikin gw serem. Apalagi bisa buat ngerbersiin Coke Cola. Wah tambah was2 gw ama minuman soft drink ^^;;

Seperti baru lagi, mengkilap!!! MUAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHA <----- dasar kampungan loe!!! Kekekekekekeke

Setelah gw tau begitu jadi serem kalo minum soft drink, kalo minum yah sesekali sih boleh lah, asal jgn jeterusan, bisa gawat ^^!! Nah kalo lo pada yg sering minum soft drink, mending ganti Aqua aja deh kalo ga teh anget sbg ganti na ^^!!! Serem uey tau soft drink keluaran sini bahaya banget, kalo yg luar negeri punya sih gw percaya abis. Dan ini juga diperkuat lagi oleh temen bokap gw yg punya pabrik soft drink, kata na jgn kebanyakan minum softdrink, soal na zat karbonat na lbh tajem daripada yg luar negeri punya dan dia pernah test. Dia celupin sepotong daging mentah (ga tau daging apaan, yg penting mentah deh!!!) ke segelas soft drink selama semalaman. Alhasil tuh daging raib!!! Padahal di taro di ruangan terkunci!!!! Ini bukan sulap bukan sihir... Tapi beneran ^^;;

Nah lo pada mau minum lagi tuh softdrink???? Apalagi keluaran Indonesia??? Mikir2 deh!!! Drpd ngerusakin badan lo!!!! :P

The True Story of the 47 ronin

The true story of the 47 ronin (masterless samurai) of the province of Harima is probably the best-known story of the valor and ideals (the Code of Bushido) of Japan's famous samurai warriors. Our tale begins in 1701, a time of relative peace during the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Shogun Tsunayoshi lived and ruled from Edo, while the Emperor, who had little political power, lived in Kyoto. To show respect to the Emperor, Tsunayoshi sent gifts and envoys to Kyoto for the New Year's celebrations, and in return, the Emperor sent his own envoys to Edo in March. To receive the Imperial envoys, Tsunayoshi appointed two young daimyos (feudal provincial lords), Naganori Asano-Takuminokami, The Lord of the Castle of Ako in Harima Province, and Munehare Date, Lord of Sendai to act as hosts during the forthcoming visit of a member of the Imperial Court in Kyoto. Because the daimyos were inexperienced in entertaining high born guests, the Shogun appointed an elderly high official named Yoshinaka Kira-Kozukenosuke to assist them.

Kira, whom history describes as greedy and conceited, became very angry with Lord Asano for not presenting him with expensive gifts (to show appreciation, respect, etc.) and instead of helping Lord Asano became very abusive and insulting towards him. Kira, determined to get even, used every opportunity to publicly humiliate Asano. After two months of abuse, Asano's tolerance was gone.

On March 14, unable to take the insults from Kira anymore, Lord Asano drew his sword (itself a capital offense when done inside Edo Castle) and struck Kira wounding him slightly. For his offense, The Shogun Tsunayoshi ordered Lord Asano to immediately commit seppuku (ritual suicide). Kira, on the other hand, received no punishment; in fact, he became an object of sympathy and was allowed to continue his official duties.

The Shogun's failure to have Kira share in the responsibility angered the followers of Asano, who felt that Kira's improper actions were ignored and Asano's punishment too harsh.

By law, when a samurai lord committed seppuku, his castle was confiscated by the Shogun, his family was disinherited, and his 321 samurai retainers were ordered to disband, thus becoming Ronin or masterless warriors. Asano's samurai were unsure of how to act in the wake of this disaster. Some thought they should refuse to turn over the castle to the Shogun, some thought they should plot revenge and kill Kira, and others thought they should respect the law and surrender peacefully.

Oishi Kuranosuke, Asano's Chief Councilor, listened to the varying opinions and finally decided on a plan. He would petition the Shogun to reestablish the House of Asano with Lord Asano's younger brother, Daigaku, as it's head. If that failed the samurai of Lord Asano would refuse to turn over the castle and defend it to the death.

In the next few days, as the Shogun's agents were on the road enroute to the Ako, all of the Asano samurai which were opposed to the petition deserted the castle, leaving only 60 loyal samurai behind. Before the shogun's men could reach the castle, Daigaku Asano sent a letter to Oishi, asking him to obey the orders of the Shogun and hand the castle over.

Oishi and the 59 other samurai accepted Daigaku's request as binding on them as the word of Lord Asano himself, but before they quit the castle they made plans to avenge their Lord Asano's disgrace by killing Kira, whose un-samurai like character had brought their lord and house to such a tragic end. Only this would restore Asano's rightful honor.

The men split up to conceal their plans from Kira, who naturally suspected that Asano's retainers would try to get revenge against him. Oishi went to Yamashina, a suburb of Kyoto, where he earned a reputation as a drunken gambler, a ruse that successfully deceived the Shogun's police and Kira's many spies.

The Shogun, still concerned that the affair might not be ended, ordered the arrest of Daigaku Asano and sentenced him to confinement in the main villa of the Asano family, thus ending any remaining hope that the House of Asano might be reestablished.

For nearly two years they waited, disguised as merchants, street vendors and even drunks to get information on Kira and to be close to him should an opportunity arise to storm Kira's mansion. Finally, Kira and his allies finally relaxed their suspicions of Oishi and his men.

At a secret meeting, Oishi and the other 59 ronin decided that the time had come to move against Kira. But Oishi would allow only 46 of the men to participate with him in the attempt. He sent the other 13 back home to their families.

One by one Oishi and his men infiltrated Edo, and on a snowy winter night of December 14, 1702 the 47 ronin attacked the mansion of Kira while he was having a tea party. The 47 ronin divided into two bands and stormed the mansion from the front and rear gates. In the great battle that followed, the 47 ronin entered into battle against Kira's 61 armed guards. At the end of the 1 1/2 hour battle, Asano's ronin had either subdued or killed all of Kira's men without any losses of their own.

After a thorough search, Kira was found hiding in an outhouse. The ronin brought Kira to the courtyard and offered him the same chance their Lord Asano was given to honorably commit seppuku. Kira could not commit seppuku, so the ronin beheaded him. Then, to symbolize the completion of their mission, the 47 returned to Asano's grave at Sengaku-ji Temple and set Kira's head before it, thus declaring their Lord's honor redeemed.

Prepared to die for their deed, Oishi sent two delegates to the Magistrate of Edo, informing him of what had been done and telling the official that they would be waiting at the
Sengaku-ji Temple, awaiting orders from the Shogun.

The Shogun Tsunayoshi, instead of being angry, was deeply impressed with the loyalty demonstrated by the 47 ronin. This made Tsunayoshi decision all the more difficult. Although clearly sympathetic to their heroic act, he was nonetheless faced with a dilemma. Should he spare the 47 ronin in recognition of their great display of bushido and their defense of their Lord Asano's honor, or should they be punished according to the law. If he overlooked their crime for sentimental reasons would that belittle their honor and weaken the samurai code? After 47 days of deliberation, Tsunayoshi ordered that Oishi and 45 of his men were to execute themselves not as criminals but as honored warriors. The youngest of the ronin, who had been sent to Ako with the news of Kira's death was spared from the sentence.

On February 4, 1703, the 46 ronin were divided into four groups and handed over to four different daimyo, who were ordered to supervise and witness their deaths. Oishi and the other 45 ronin all committed seppuku simultaneously, dignifying themselves in their valiant sacrifice. Upon their deaths, the 46 ronin were buried side by side next to their master at Sengaku-ji Temple.

Today, the memory of the 47 ronin is celebrated in a play called Chusingura which moves the audience to tears and excitement as it develops the theme of the magnificent sacrifice of the 47 ronin. Additionally, each year thousands of Japanese visit the gravesite of the 46 ronin at Sengaku-ji Temple to pay homage to the honor and loyalty of the 47 ronin and their dedication to the code of bushido.

Story Behind ronin_9999

Alo... Perkenalkan nama gw ronin_9999 kalo nama asli jgn deh... Bahaya... Apalagi di kota sebesar ini... Kenapa gw bisa milih ronin_9999 sbg nick gw??? Awal na sih dari kegilaan gw maen CS... Ampe2 bener2 fanatic deh... Gw dulu rela maenin nih Game walaupun mesti cabut... Uda langganan... ^^!!!!

Terus gw terpaksa pindah skull gara2 di DO >.< (pengalaman paling pahit!!!!) gara2 nilai gw ga cukup... Tapi kalo uda kenal gw pasti enak deh ^^ ga seseram tampang na koq :P, Jayuzzz mala Iya :D

Nick Ronin gw dapet pas gw sering maen Game Battle Realms...

NO ONE!!!! NEVER SAY GIVE UP!!!!! CHAYO!!!!!

Dan mungkin Ronin juga cocok utk gw karena di Jepang sana, sebutan Ronin adalah seorg pelajar yg gagal dalam pelajaran, dan itu pernah terjadi dalam hidup gw, ga naek kelas pas di SMA, dan itu menurut gw adlh moment yg paling memalukan dalam hidup gw dan gw sempet depresi alias Stress berat!!! Tapi bagaimanapun gw mesti berusaha untuk naek kls... Mungkin pada dasar na gw lemot kali yah ^^;; Jujur aja nih... Nilai gw selalu pas2an, kecuali B.Ingg, ga tau kenapa gw tertarik utk belajar dan itu uda dari kecil, tapi ternyata ada guna na juga bel. bhs asing, mala gw pengen bel. bhs Mandarin n Jepang, kalo bisa Perancis sekalian ^^. Tapi 1 step at the time... Pelan2 aja dulu kekekekek... Maklum lagi sibuk ama kerjaan yg uda menumpuk... Tapi ga tau pada dasar na gw lagi semangat apa gimana hari ini gw bisa nyelesain Tugas gw MUAHAHAHAHAH!!! wah OOT deh gw :P Gomen2 ^^;;

Ok deh sekian dulu tentang nick gw kekekekke Sayonara ^O^
